If you are a director or producer, you want to be able to pull from a vast knowledge of the film or television industry. In my opinion, you can't be great without researching what has come before you. Spielberg acknowledges this in a short video clip from the American Film Institute. Looking away from current content, to past film and television shows give you a greater creative template. You need to see what great directors have done before, Scorcese, Coppola, Kubrick, Hitchcock, etc. As well as submerge yourself deeply into the works of David Fincher, Tarantino, Joel and Ethan Coen, Ridley Scott and Spielberg himself.

Take a moment and listen to some great advice.
